ISAAC AKERS GETS GB CALL UP!

29/6/2016

YOUNG ATHLETE IS SPONSORED BY THE TRAVERS FOUNDATION

PictureIsaac Akers represents Team GB in Tbilisi, Georgia
Talented young athlete Isaac Akers, aged 16 from Market Harborough, is heading to Tbilisi, Georgia to represent Great Britain at the inaugural European Youth Championships taking place from 14th to 17th July.

Isaac - a member of Corby Athletics Club - will proudly wear his first ever GB vest in the 3000 metres event.

Isaac receives financial support to achieve his sporting dreams from local charity The Travers Foundation.

The Travers Foundation helps 13 to 30 year olds living in Northamptonshire, Rutland or Leicestershire improve their skills in sports, the creative arts and the performing arts.  The charity will provide monetary assistance to Isaac for coaching and competition expenses.

Isaac has had an amazing 2016 season to date.  So far this year he has won the Leicestershire County Schools Cross Country Championships at Ratcliffe College in January.  This was swiftly followed by another win in the Under 17 Men's English National Cross Country Championships at Donington Park in February.  Isaac said of this win:

"My training has been going really well and I felt good going into the race.  I thought I had a chance of winning but there were a lot of quality athletes taking part.  This race was one of my main goals for the season so I was very happy to win it."

In March he then won the Under 17 Men British Athletics Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham.

Terry Forsey, Chairman of The Travers Foundation, said:

"We are delighted to be able to assist a super-talented young athlete like Isaac to achieve his dreams of representing his country in international events.

"His 2016 season is off to a magnificent start, and we wish him continued success and look forward to seeing how he gets on in Tbilisi this Summer."
