JOE WATKINS AND TOM SYMONS PICKED FOR GREAT BRITAIN TEAM
Joe Watkins, aged 17 and from Northampton, has been selected to represent Great Britain in the WAKO Cadets and Junior European Championships in San Sebastian, Spain.
The prestigious tournament is taking place between 23 and 30 August, and competition was fierce for the available spaces in the team.
What has made this extra special for Joe is that his cousin and training partner Tom Symons has also been selected for the GB team.
Both Joe and Tom receiving funding from local charity The Travers Foundation. The Travers Foundation helps 13 to 30 year olds living in Northamptonshire, Rutland or Leicestershire improve their skills in sports, the creative arts and the performing arts.
While being selected for Team GB is a highlight for both lads, 2015 has been a fantastic year, with success at the WAKO Junior Euro Cup in Birmingham, which saw wins for Joe in the -69kg category and Tom gaining two firsts and a silver, as well as great all-round performances from the ECKA Kingsthorpe club who Joe helps to coach.
Joe also attended the Cimac World Cup on 5th July, which hosted the best kickboxers in the country and had competitors from Ireland, Austria and Slovenia. Joe had to fight in the Senior Men's categories having just turned 17, and was narrowly beaten by De-Reece Williams, a GB-team mate and multiple World and European champion.
Joe says:
"I was lucky enough to be selected for the World Championships in Italy last year, and it was an amazing experience. I hope to build on all my learning from that event, and what I've learnt in the past year to push me through more rounds at this year's European Championships."
Terry Forsey, chairman of the Travers Foundation says:
"We at the Travers Foundation are so proud of what Tom and Joe have achieved over the past year, and we wish them every success for the European Championships in Spain."
