Amateur Golfer International Ryan Evans (Wellingborough, Northamptonshire) was selected to represent England Golf in a number of championships during a five-week stay in Australia during January & February. He will be joined by Harry Casey (Enfield, Middlesex)
They will be seeking to follow in the footsteps of a number of past internationals who have produced a string of successes Down Under in recent years.
Ryan, 23, was capped for the first time in last year’s Home Internationals, enjoyed a successful 2013, finishing seventh on the Titleist/Footjoy England Golf Order of Merit.
His successes included victory in the Berkshire Trophy and the Biarritz Cup in France, while he also won the Scrutton Jug for the best aggregate score from the Berkshire and Brabazon Trophies. On top of that, he finished joint runner-up in the St Andrews Links Trophy and joint third in the French Open Stroke Play.
Ryan who received Tournament Support from the Travers Foundation in 2013 said “I would like to say a big thank you to the Travers Foundation for supporting me for the 2013 playing season. It really helped me up my game and I hope know I will do well in Australia.”
Ryan wasn’t wrong, he finished 9th in the Masters of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne on 7th – 10th January and followed that as medallist winning the 36-hole qualifying Australian Amateur Championship. Despite three suspensions of play over two days, Ryan finished with rounds of 68 and a new course record 67 to finish at 9-under par, three clear of the field.
The Amateur Championships was held at The Grange, South Australia, on 14th – 19th January and is Australia’s oldest golfing event, dating back to 1894. Past winners include Michael Clayton, Michael Campbell, Mathew Goggin, Brett Rumford, Kristie Smith, and Nikki Campbell, and the champion receives exemption into the Australian Opens, they are the most prized titles in Australian amateur golf.
Ryan now moves on to the Lake Macquarie International at Belmont on 23rd - 26th January, before the New South Wales Medal at Pennant Hills Golf Club and Castle Hill Country Club on 29th – 31st January.
