SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES, LA 2015
Chris Southwell, 22, of Welland Way in Oakham is packing his bags ready to head to LA this summer for the Special Olympics thanks to The Rutland Mercury and The Travers Foundation.
The Mercury featured a story on Chris and his magnificent achievement in being selected for the Special Olympics GB Basketball Team, but said that he needed help in raising the funds to make this trip of a lifetime happen.
Local charity The Travers Foundation saw the article and got in touch, and they are providing him with £1250 match funding for coaching and expenses.
The Travers Foundation helps 13 to 30 year olds living in Northamptonshire, Rutland or Leicestershire improve their skills in sports, the creative arts and the performing arts.
Terry Forsey, Chairman of the Travers Foundation, said:
“I set up the Travers Foundation to help people just like Chris. There are too many talented people who are unable to access lottery funding but who, with a little financial help, can achieve their sporting ambitions.”
Chris and his family are very grateful for the Travers Foundation's financial support. Chris added “Thank you so very much for your incredibly generous offer of support, I am overwhelmed with your kindness and humanity.”
The Special Olympics World Games is taking place between 25th July and 2nd August. It is a programme of sports training and competition for athletes of any ability level with a learning disability.
Chris, who has autism, will join 7000 other athletes from 177 countries in the event which celebrates what people can achieve with the correct support and training.
The GB Special Olympic Team has just 115 members, and Chris is the only basketball player from the East Midlands to have been selected.
The opening ceremony, taking place on 25th July, will feature performances from well-known artistes including Stevie Wonder, Avril Lavigne and Nicole Scherzinger.
