The Travers Foundation helps Chris Southwell to attend the Special Olympics in Los Angeles in 2015.
A regular reader of the Rutland Mercury, John Leslie, was moved by the front page story on 9th May, about Chris Southwell’s plight, following his inclusion in the GB Special Olympics Basketball Team for 2015.
Knowing that The Travers Foundation, a local charity (www.travers-foundation.org.uk), was created by Terry Forsey in Gretton to address the support of 18 to 30 year olds living in this area achieve their sporting and artistic ambitions, John contacted him with Christopher’s story.
“I set up the Travers Foundation to help people just like Chris.” said Terry Forsey, Chairman of The Travers Foundation, “There are too many talented people who are unable to access lottery funding but who, with a little financial help, can achieve their sporting ambitions.”
Terry immediately invited John to set up a meeting with Chris to discuss how The Travers Foundation could support him in his efforts to raise the necessary funds.
The result is that Chris has been awarded £1,250 of matched funding from The Travers Foundation to pay for all his coaching and expenses in travelling to the Games in Los Angeles next year.
Chris and his family are very grateful for this financial support. Chris added “Thank you so very much for your incredibly generous offer of support, I am overwhelmed with your kindness and humanity.”
Terry concluded “This would not have been possible had it not been for The Rutland Mercury’s initial story and John’s keen eye.”
