With rain threatening all afternoon, Glastonblaby hosted the final of Travers Rising Stars 2021 to a sell-out audience at Leicester Lions RFC in Blaby. Each finalist performed their 15 minutes set on the Lions Stage. Sue, 47, from Stanwick, completed the Sywell Triathlon, comprising a 500m swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 5k run, in aid of The Travers Foundation after being diagnosed with workplace stress in 2019 and deciding that exercise, not medication, was the solution. Starting with a Park Run and aqua aerobics, followed eventually by open water swimming sessions at Sywell Reservoir, Sue found her health improving and her determination increasing. “When I arrived at my first Park Run I sat in the car and cried because I thought I had no place there, but I made myself get out and do it – walking all the way round and finishing last, but I did it,” explained Sue. “With the help of the Couch To 5K app, I moved on to a mix of walking and running, gradually increasing how much I was running. Tri-January is a yearly introduction to triathlons, and I took advantage of free-swimming sessions at Northamptonshire Tri Club, which eventually introduced me to open water swimming. At that point and I just thought ‘why not train for a triathlon?’. I had to learn to do front crawl, and I only had a mountain bike, not a road bike, but I made the decision and it just went from there. ![]() “After being really ill with stress, I found that I was doing something that made me feel good physically and mentally, I lost four stones and went from a size 18 to a size 10; I was really proud of myself and so were my family, and it has made such a difference to my life.” Sue chose The Travers Foundation as her charity because it has supported her 19-year-old son, Matthew, who is a talented organist. The organisation, which was set up to support young people’s development in sports, music, and the arts, helps fund Matthew’s music lessons. “It’s a fantastic charity and all about supporting young people,” said Sue. “My target is £1,000 and I’ve raised almost £900, and I know there’s still pledges to come in. People supported me – I had people encouraging me and pushing me on right through the event, including people who weren’t even part of the event cycling or running alongside me to keep me going and motivate me. “Finishing the triathlon was exciting and energising and I’m very proud of what I have achieved, and as The Travers Foundation is all about trying to improve yourself, it seems like the right cause to support.” Find out more about The Travers Foundation at www.travers-foundation.org.uk To support Sue Foster’s fundraising, visit her JustGiving page here ![]() Young performing artists may well find that they emerge from lockdown onto one of the biggest stages in the region thanks to a competition to find exceptional new talent. A Land Rover driving experience is up for grabs through an online raffle as the Northamptonshire-based charity begins making plans to kickstart its efforts in preparation for 2021. Because of the devastating effects lockdown has had on sporting events and arts venues this year, the organisation has closed 2020 applications – but has launched an online appeal in the hope of being ready to step up again as the situation begins to return to normal. The Travers Foundation is a volunteer-run charity that provides financial support to local 13 to 30-year-olds to help them realise their dreams in sport, music and the arts. The talents of teams, groups and individuals in Northamptonshire, Rutland and Leicestershire are nurtured with the help of grants. Typically, support is available for coaching and professional support for those in sports or the arts; studio support for the performing arts; competition support to cover entry fees and travel and accommodation expenses and performance support to help cover planning costs, auditions and rehearsals. Terry Forsey, Chairman of The Travers Foundation, said: “The coronavirus pandemic and lockdown hit the world of sport and the arts very hard indeed, and it also hit the charity sector very hard. “Because venues are closed and events are cancelled, we can’t help any more young people this year, but we are keen to get the ball rolling again to make sure we’re there for them when applications reopen. The problem is, arranging fundraising events is no longer straightforward, so an online raffle seemed a logical solution.” The charity has, therefore, launched an online raffle, selling tickets for £1 each with the lucky ticket winning a Half Day Land Rover Experience for up to three people at the East of England off-road centre in Rockingham, Northamptonshire. Enter the raffle at https://raffall.com/18498/enter-raffle-to-win-charity-land-rover-experience-hosted-by-terry-forsey The raffle closes on 3 July 2020 at 5pm. The Travers Foundation helps young people aged between 13 and 30 living in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland with funding to realise their dreams in sport, music and arts. However, in light of the current circumstances regarding the coronavirus and its impact on sporting events worldwide and the temporary closures of arts venues, their support packages may be revised. Sadly, the funding team will not be able to consider any new applications until at least June 2020, and then that will be for future funding only as they are unable to look at retrospective funding applications. Therefore for anyone new applying for support, it has to be for activities from July 2020 onwards. Terry Forsey, chairman of The Travers Foundation, said: "We work with young people all the time at The Travers Foundation and appreciate that this is an extremely worrying time for them, with exams cancelled, schools shut and so much uncertainty in their lives. "That's why we wanted to reassure the young people we currently support that we will continue supporting them. "We didn't want to put looking at new funding applications on hold, but with so many events worldwide being postponed, restrictions on coaching and training in place, and arts venues cancelling programmes, we had to take a pragmatic approach." The volunteer-run charity, based in Gretton, was set up in 2012 to help young people aged between 13 and 30 years living in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire or Rutland improve their skills in sports, the creative arts and the performing arts, and achieve their full potential. During James' time working with The Travers Foundation he has not only achieved his ambition of being the best in Britain, he's also won a hoard of gold medals at numerous national and international tournaments. In 2017 he won gold at the British Championships; in 2018 in the European Archery Championships; and in 2019 at the World Cup in Berlin. But now, as James reaches his milestone 30th birthday, this sadly means that the charity can no longer offer him financial support as he's passed the upper age-limit. James explains his relationship with the charity and what it means to him: "Prior to receiving support from The Travers Foundation, I would struggle to find the funds required to attend national tournaments, and competing on the international stage was a distant dream. "Receiving support from the charity has provided a huge relief, and allowed me to compete at more events both nationally and internationally. During my time with the Travers Foundation, I have grown in confidence and now feel comfortable on the international stage." James - who first picked up a bow at just four years old - has a Team Gold from the European Archery Championships in Legnica, Poland, a highly significant achievement as this was the first time ever GB had won a European compound bow men's team gold, and also 50 years since Team GB come top at this championship. Terry Forsey, Chairman of The Travers Foundation, said: "Words cannot express how immensely proud we are of James and what he has achieved over the time we've worked together. He's been to tournaments in Las Vegas, Shanghai, Slovenia, Berlin, and Poland to name but a few - and just about everywhere he goes, he wins! He's phenomenally talented, and we will really miss working with him. "We had a small 'leaving do' for James, where some of the Travers' team got a chance to say goodbye. But although we can sadly no longer offer him financial support, we will continue to follow his career and wish him all the best for the next stage in his journey."
