The Travers Foundation are delighted to announce that local accountancy firm Haines Watts have agreed a three-year sponsorship arrangement with the charity. Northamptonshire-based The Travers Foundation assists young people aged between 13 and 30 living in the county, Rutland and Leicestershire by helping them with funding in sports, the creative and performing arts. Pictured here is Lucy Hatton, the Kettering-based hurdler, who is supported by The Travers Foundation, with William Sharman a Travers Foundation Trustee and Commonwealth Silver Medallist, and Chris Timms and Steve Watts, partners from the Kettering and Northampton offices of Haines Watts. Lucy has had a fantastic 2015 season, going from local amateur athlete to Silver Medallist at the GB Indoor Championships followed by a European Indoor Silver medal in Prague - all achieved with the help of The Travers Foundation as at the time she received no other external funding. Terry Forsey, Chairman of The Travers Foundation, commented: “The problem these days in reaching the peak of your profession in sport, the creative or performing arts is that you need to have lots of funding as well as lots of talent. Not everybody has a willing benefactor who can give them this financial commitment. This is where charities such as The Travers Foundation can assist youngsters from all backgrounds fulfil their dreams. Whilst our beneficiaries acquire their basic skills at school, clubs or local associations and, indeed, these institutions provide an excellent foundation for their sport and artistic talents, as their ability improves and ambition grows, they often need additional qualified coaching, mentoring or teaching to help improve their skills and performance. By providing the necessary ongoing support needed by our young athletes and artists, we can ensure that we give them the very best start. "Backing from the community and local businesses is key to our ability to continue to make improvements to the support we can offer and we’re delighted that Haines Watts have agreed to help us in this process.” For further information on the work of the Travers Foundation please visit www.travers-foundation.org.uk For further information about Haines Watts please visit their website ends Press information – Terry Forsey, The Travers Foundation – 01536 771440 The Travers Foundation - registered charity number 1154203 The Travers Foundation press releases are carefully crafted by Helen Bach. Joe competed as part of the GB Team and is delighted and very proud to bring home a silver medal for his country. Joe receives funding to help with training and expenses for such events from Northamptonshire-based charity The Travers Foundation. The Travers Foundation helps 13 to 30 year olds living in Northamptonshire, Rutland or Leicestershire improve their skills in sports, the creative arts and the performing arts. The WAKO European Championships took place from 25th to 29th August in San Sebastien, with over 1300 competitors from 36 European countries competing. Joe made it to the finals in the Junior -69kg points fighting category after some tough three x two minute fights against Alparslan Turk (Turkey) with a clean 10 – 0 victory; Zoltan Laurincz (Hungary) and then, even more importantly, with the world Number One in this category, Simone De Vita (Italy), in the semi-finals. The fight with De Vita was extremely close with Joe just having a two point lead when the final bell went. The final, held on the Saturday, was a first for Team GB with two GB fighters competing for the European title. Joe was up against De-Reece Williams, with whom he trains twice a week in Stoke on Trent, and De-Reece is the current World Champion. De-Reece went into the final as the favourite as he has been competing at international level for many years and holds numerous titles. Neither fighter was allowed anyone to coach them as they were from the same country. It was a great fight between the two and Joe never gave up. After a tough and entertaining three rounds, Joe lost out to De-Reece by just four points and took the silver medal. Joe was obviously disappointed not to take Gold but was over the moon to win a Silver Medal on only his second outing for Team GB. He now has his eyes firmly set on Gold at the World Championships in Dublin next August and the training for this has already begun. Joe said “I have loved every minute of the European Championships. I was really pleased with my fighting on every outing and so were my coaches. I now know what I have to work on for next year, there is still a lot more to do. I’ve forged many new international friendships and cemented existing friendships within the GB team. The GB team came fifth in the medal table overall after Hungary, Italy, Ireland and the Russian Federation The final medal count was six Gold, five Silver and six Bronze which is brilliant. I can’t wait for next year.” Selections for next year’s GB squad start early next year at the British Championships and through regular squad training sessions and camps. Joe will continue his tough training regime five times a week as well as competing on the national and international circuit. A silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Prague, and three personal bests - this local lass is going places! She is currently ranked 2nd in the UK, 5th in Europe and 6th in the world for senior 60m hurdles. Lucy is sponsored by The Travers Foundation, which helps 13 to 30 year olds living in Northamptonshire, Rutland or Leicestershire improve their skills in sports, the creative arts and the performing arts. The Travers Foundation helps with funding for Lucy's travel and accommodation at competitions, coaching, kit and massage treatment. Lucy explains: "I've got big plans for 2015, I find that travel is my biggest expenditure particularly when I go to Europe to compete "Another major cost is treatments such as massage - with training six times a week my hamstrings and glutes get tight and need loosening off, which becomes expensive over the year. "It's fantastic that The Travers Foundation can help me with these costs. This frees up my time to concentrate on important things like my performance on the track. "My GB experience has been incredible and Prague was just what I needed to develop as an athlete and move forward into the outdoor season. "To come away with three personal bests and a silver medal is outstanding - I'm looking to convert this to outdoors and show there is more to come!" Terry Forsey of The Travers Foundation added: "We are delighted to be able to assist Lucy - she's a rising local star and gets no other financial support such as National Lottery Funding. He's already a champion with a BKFA National title in Juniors and Adults, an ISKA British Champion title in the -71kg and +71kg junior categories and is a winner of the CIMAC Superleague -69kg juniors - and is aspiring to add to these titles. He trains in Stoke-on-Trent twice a week with a Team GB coach, but also attends ECKA in Kingsthorpe and the Pro Martial Arts in Northampton, as well as WAKO GB training in Windsor, Birmingham or Coventry and competes at tournaments in the UK and abroad. As you can imagine, all these competitions and travel are very expensive, so Joe approached The Travers Foundation for help with sponsorship. The Travers Foundation helps 13 to 30 year olds living in Northamptonshire, Rutland or Leicestershire improve their skills in sports, the creative arts and the performing arts. The Travers Foundation have been delighted to help Joe with funding. So far 2015 has been a busy year for Joe, and he has already competed in the KWON tournament in Birmingham where he got through to the semi-finals, and achieved a bronze medal in the -69kg juniors category of the Watford Open competition. He has also been to the Athens Open Challenge in Greece where he secured a bronze medal in the -74kg category, and competed in the WMO British Championships in Rugby. Joe comments further on his recent tournaments: "The WMO British Championships is a fairly new and alternative governing body in kickboxing so I was unsure what to expect. However, it was a great day with some tremendous fighting from all age ranges. I had a good day at the office and managed to secure a gold in the men’s -70kg and 16-17 year olds +70kg category. This means I can now attend the WMO World Championships in Rugby in October and also attend their squad training should I decide to do this. "On Sunday, 15th February it was the WAKO British Championships. I fought in the -69kg juniors and got to the quarter finals and in the -74kg went out to De-Reece Williams, several times world champion and one of my sparring partners at Maddogs. The standard of fighting was exceptional and I now know what I have to work on to improve my skills still further."
